Lately I have been asked by a lot of my friends to get married and “Settle down” in life. Some excerpts…
“Karthik, you need to get married. I’m serious”
“Karthik, it’s high time you got married. Couple’ a years and you’ll have a beautiful kid”
“Dude, you are the only one left. Better get married soon.”
So I did this research to back up some of my reasons to not get married and not have kids. I’ve had this tag line for more than 2 years now – “Save the earth – No more kids for 10 years”. I have successfully passed 2 years. So have some people who I know.
Now, let me tell you the importance of that tag line. I wrote this first thinking… may be it will get you to think. May be it will get you to join this league. May be it will do good to some one.
This is going to be a little long, but please read on.
Reason 1: For the greater good!
Let me explain this with statistics to support my statements.
As of 2007, the average birth rate for the whole world was 20.3 per year per 1000 total population, which for the world population of 6.5 billion (65,000,000,000), comes to 134 million babies per year. This means we humans alone bring in 134,000,000 babies every year. Remember, there are other species that require space too.
And the cost involved in supporting a human being with an average life span is Rs.25,00,000 or USD$50,000. But lets take a very conservative figure and only calculate the cost incurred in a human living for 25 year – Rs.15,00,000/- or USD$30,000 (Most of the cost involved for a human being is in the 1st 25 years, as that covers education, higher food consumption, needs another human’s support at least until 15 years on an average and lot of other stuff).
And the number of people who die every year is only 9.6 per 1000 of world population. Which means only around 62 million is dying. That is less than half of the number of humans born every year. At this rate, first we will end up killing (knowing / unknowingly) all the other species for our survival. Then fight against each other for the survival of the fittest.
Trust me, that way, future is very bleak and as a superior species (as far as we know) we end up achieving nothing.
And having got the opportunity to be the superior species on earth and not utilizing our powers to protect it is unforgivable.
Now lets see, what people interested in babies can do. There are about 100 million orphans in this world (believe it or not) who need care, education, daily food, shelter …a life!
If every adult in this world go by this rule of not having a kid for just 1 year and instead will adopt (literally or virtually) just 1 kid and give him/her a life, the whole world will be… Well, Utopia! (I mean a perfect place. Not quite literally.)
Nowadays you can adopt a kid without even being with him/her, if you like it that way.
But that is too much to expect and literally impractical. However, if we have this as a mission or a goal to support 1 kid that needs us and can make this sacrifice, you will not only have a kid, but will be a Savior! And I said 10 years because; only our generation has to do this. The next one will learn from it.
You can be a savior of this World!
Reason 2: We’ve made this world sick in many ways and it has to be cured. “In fact, I would go as far to say, what this world really needs is a Doctor”. The Doctor would never like it the way it is right now. Every species, every living thing, every life, is as big a miracle as you are!
Reason 3: I prefer a wet T-shirt over a wet diaper any day
To conclude, I’m not asking all of you to not get married. Go ahead and get married if that’s what you like, but think about saving a kid rather than having one. And being married is a pain anyway
This is the way I like it and I would appreciate if you don’t force or keep telling people who are single and like it that way to marry and follow the road to doom!
P.S: Sorry if the last line sounds too rude, as long as you get the point, I’m happy
Do Humans Have Only 23 years to Go?
by Karthik on Jul.18, 2008, under Cool Stuff, Environment, GEAS, human civilizations, Human race, Science
I read about this article in Daily Galaxy news. Its a pretty awesome site for daily update on whats happening in the universe. So here, the Institute for the Future is inviting the world to play Superstruct, the worlds first massively multi-player forecasting game. It’s not just about envisioning the future—it’s about inventing the future, creating superstructures to solve and counter super threats facing the planet.
It seems based on an year long Super-computer simulation, the Global Extinction Awareness System (GEAS) has reset the “survival horizon” for Homo sapiens from “indefinite” to 23 years. Yea… 23 years! The GEAS president Audrey Chen said “The survival horizon identifies the point in time after which a threatened population is expected to experience a catastrophic collapse, is the point from which it a species is unlikely to recover. By identifying a survival horizon of 2042, GEAS has given human civilization a definite deadline for making substantive changes to planet and practices.”
Well, 2042 is definitely not the end of the world for us. Obviously. But, it does emphasizes in changing our daily practices towards the environment. So definitely somewhere down the line, the human race will be extinct just like any other species. But, may that be in millions or billions and not just a few thousands. Even the Dinosaurs managed 88 million years of survival before, being supposedly hit by a meteor. We are only 200,000 years old!
Save the earth – Become a Super Hero!

Ever wondered what is the difference between an ordinary man and a Super hero? Given a choice, like the red and blue pills, red being the option to become a super hero. Which one would you choose? …
Made your choice? Well, let me tell you… like in the movies no one is going to search for you and give you that choice. Right? But you could still make the choice and take the red pill. Here is one of many ways you can become a Super hero. I’m writing no fiction. I’m not good at it.
Read this Save Earth report. One but Huge step that you can take to be the savior of earth is – Go Vegetarian. Here are some excerpts from the report…
“…By far the most important non-CO2 greenhouse gas is methane, and the number one source of methane worldwide is animal agriculture…”.
“Animal agriculture produces more than 100 million tons of methane a year.”
“…Methane cycles out of the atmosphere in just 8 years, so reducing meat consumption quickly translates to cooling of the earth.”
So go ahead and become a Super Hero! A Savior of the earth, the entire human race and more importantly every other species!
